>> abc7 news starts right now with live breaking news. >> that breaking news is happening in lafayette where a police officer shot and wound add man in a normally quiet neighborhood. >> good morning, i am eric thomas here for kristen sze. the wounded man is hospitalized and the sheriff tries to put together what led to the incident. it happened at 7:00 a.m., on woodview drive. katie marzullo joins us with the story. katie? >> this is a great neighborhood, big million dollar homes, quiet families live here but this morning at 7:00 a.m., shocking violence rang out at a home just around the corner from where we are standing at the crime scene. police say officers were called

to the home just after 7:00 a.m. and two officers arrived on the scene. the shots rang out shortly after that. a man was wounded. he lives in the home. that is all we know officially at this point. neighbors heard at least two or three shots. the man is in surgery at the medical center and is expected to survive. the police chief wrapped up a news conference says this began with several 9-1-1 calls but in each case the callers hung up. >> two of the officers responded to the locion on their arrival, they approached the residence, the subject came from the home with a knife. the officers order the subject to drop the knife. several minutes later, shots erupted from the officers. >> it is a friendly family as far as i know, more friendly than other suburban people that tend to be stand offish. a little been shaken up. it is unusual to see this time of police presence.

>> that neighbor also tells us that the family that lives there has the last name of "shocks," a mom and dad and two adult children, one son and one daughter and the daughter's boyfriend. the parents are out of town right now and are in mexico according to that neighbor. some neighbors say there was a party at the house on easter but the man we her from says, no, that is not the case. as this is an officer-involved shooting there is a protocol that needs to be followed and the district attorney and the contra costa county sheriff will be investigating the shooting. we understand aside from the man who is in the hospital police have not made any other arrests. live for abc7 news. >> this is the one-year anniversary for the deadly shooting rampage at oikos university in oakland land.

one goh is not competent to stand trial according to a judge's ruling. oikos will hold two memorial concerts for the victims. one is in saturday on oakland, the other is in the el dorado hills april 13. >> a proposal to slow restrictions in california will be hurt for ammunition. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard joins with us what it means for gun owners. cornell? >> a lot of gun owners are speaking out about this, about a proposed law to regulate and tax ammunition. gun control advocates say it is just too easy to walk unto the gun stores like the old west gun room and buy ammunition. they say it is time to change that. buying ammunition in california is fairly easy. all you need is an i.d., proving you are own 21. berkeley assemblywoman nancy

news reporter who joins us. >> the charges are stacking up. hamid zaid is, indeed, facing even more charges. this time they are charges of completely unrelated to what happened at the walmart on sunday. the 33-year-old, zaid, today, facing charges of using oh -- oh case and giving false information to a police officer an incident that happened prior to sunday's walmart incident the he is the same man who drove through the front door of a san jose walmart store on easter sunday terrorizing customers. officers say he none jumped out and started hitting people with a blunt object and injured four people on sunday. several customers had to physically hold zaid down until police could arrive on the scene. garcia was one of those customers that came to the

rescue and he tells abc7 news about the chaos and the fear inside that store. >> we tried to grab him. then we tried to follow him. we managed to knock him down and hold him until the police came. the police came and they arrested him. >> police say that no doubt the bravery of the customers helped to keep others from getting help or possibly killed. officers say the customers are heroes because they stepped up to help. zaid remaining bars and has been in court all morning and is in bar in santa clara county and could be arraigned and back here tomorrow on charge he faces involving what happened at walmart. we are live in san jose for abc7 news. >> new this morning, we are learning more of the steel bolts that have failed on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. as we told you last week defects were found in some of the bolts or rods designed to help hold
